Well, messages get archived and you can choose how many messages are allowed in the main index before archiving occurs. This is all configurable in the "Main Index & Archive Config" area.

You can, for example, set it so that you have 100 messages in the main index and when someone goes to post message 101, the index will be archived.

I think you can also force the index to be archived so if you want to, after 6 months, you could force it to be archived.
