Archival of a thread will happen when one of the limits are reached. So, if you only want 50 messages in your main index, and don't care about the rest, leave the others default or set them to high numbers, and set max messages to 50.

You want only new posts, as in no replies to any of the messages? You need to turn
Allow only New Posts in Forum option to on. That option is the last under Forum Display Options.
