Subject: Favoured Ornament

No defence,
The task,
Immense beyond understanding,
I'm handing you a single chance,
To take part in my defiance of alliances made,
Let the entire world take note,
I give my soul to you,
Gilded in silver paper,
Layed gently on a small plate,
It's late in the day for total submission,
But never too late to offer the only thing,
Of value I ever had to give,
I offer me.

Without fanfare,
You carefully cup my heart,
I cannot impart how scared I am of hurt this time,
You are the loveliest moment I could ever find,
To lose you would be the loss of life itself.

As you place me on the mantle shelf,
With all the other knick-knacks you've collected over time,
I realise my mistake,
Was to make you more than you are,
In my eyes,
You're human nothing more,
And certainly nothing less.

I wrap my arms around myself,
Sitting on that shelf,
And quietly cry for me,
I needed so much more,
Than to be a favoured ornament this time.
