Liantu quickly swims off to where he left his bags with a couple powerful flaps of his tail. He comes back with a full waterproof bag in his right hand.

I made this just after I left. I was extremely ill - almost dead. No-one could save me. The most powerful medicine did nothing. Then, on the night I was on the verge of death, I saw the figure. A mermaid. It was in a dream and that is all that kept me from going to the dark. I saw this lady in the light. Nothing said, nothing done. Just there. I went to her, I was saved by the vision. I felt the need to put her face forever in this.

Liantu pulls out a piece of carved ivory from the bag

A land-dwelling friend gave this to me. I assure you, the creature it came from was dead of natural causes before this was taken. Here, I think you should keep this.

Liantu holds out the carving. It is of a mindbogglingly beautiful mermaid. If a closer look is taken, it can be seen for what it really is. A perfect minature replica of Cove herself.

I have told no other that story. Not even Kiara.
