One thing is certain about the pick process; it has an enormous capacity to inspire the generation of rumors. More often than not these rumors tend to be totally without merit. Whether or not the rumor that you have heard has any basis in fact is questionable to say the least. Management does not simply single out a large group of employees and arbitrarily decide they should somehow put the screws to them. There is a rationale behind the decisions they feel they want to implement. Their primary concern is to contain the costs of doing business. Our concern, as employee representatives, should be the centered around the methods management chooses to employ in order to accomplish these containments. One of the purposes of the pick meetings is for both parties to discuss (negotiate) the proposals in an attempt to obtain an equitable settlement of our differences.

To speak directly to your question of what helper jobs may or may not be subjected to changes would be irresponsible at this time, as we have had no preliminary discussions with management. Additionally, you do not mention the division you are a part of so it is difficult for me to advise you as to which of the division officers you should call for additional information. I would suggest at this time you call the union hall and ask for Signals. Inform whoever answers the phone of your concerns. Ask if they have any additional relevant information about the issues that you allude to in this letter.

A copy of the proposed pick was sent to Pete Foley. The union sent an additional copy to me. I in turn notified management that I would like to see a copy of all the changes they inserted into their pick proposal (see my June 27th letter to Mr. Martin posted on the web site). When and if I receive that list I would like to make the contents known to our people in Signals. If you are one of those people on my email list @SignalMaintainer.com you will be among the first to view it.

Finally, You have a right to be an active participant (union meetings) in the process that to a very large extent determines the conditions under which you work. You also have the right to sit back and wait to see what happens, unfortunately many of us have chosen to opt for the latter. When one does not take an active role in employment related issues; one becomes victimized by ones own ignorance. You have taken the first step towards determining your future in the transit authority by expressing your concerns on this message board. Follow it up with a union meeting, We could certainly use your help and you could make direct statements regarding your concerns about the pick.

Thank you for posting your message on the board. Your note gave me an opportunity to answer the same question for a great many others who have not as yet asked it.

Fraternally,

Ed Kehoe
