She trotted away from the pack, needing a bit of space. She was starting to love pack life more than ever before, but she was also missing the silence of solitude. She trotted farther and farther away, to near the edges of the vast territory. Suddenly, her paw slipped and she fell, skidding across the ground and creating a big gash in her side.

She tried to stand up. She managed, walked a few steps, and collapsed in a large patch of blue flowers.

Slowly, she turned so that she could look at the wound, and realized that it would be days before she recovered. She tried to howl to the pack, but loss of blood had made the sound weak, and she knew it could not reach the distant wolves.

Would she die here? Without water? She tried to force herself to think, but couldn't, and lay there worried for a while.

After about fifteen minutes, she realized that the pain from the wound was mostly gone. This was strange, but she let it go.

The sun rose high into the sky, blazing above her, and then set. Exhausted, she fell asleep.

When she awoke, it was early morning, and she looked carefully at her wound, to see if it had healed some. It was almost all the way gone! An ugly line was on her skin, but otherwise the bleeding had stopped and the skin had grown over it.

This should have taken at least three days.

She looked around in amazement, wondering what had happened. Could it be? Yes! It must have been the blue flowers. Triumphantly, she snatched a couple in her mouth and started to trot back to the pack.

When she had reached them, she related her story to Whirlwind, telling her of her find.
