One of the concerns my European friends have is the American interpretation, as presented by the media, of France and Germany’s refusal to support a U.S. led war on Iraq. They believe that Americans see this as a betrayal of their friendship and support. For most Europeans – at least as far as I can tell – this is simply not their truth.

It seems to be a general consensus that Saddam Husseim is a tyrant, and that Iraq most probably has the alleged weapons of mass destruction. Why than the lack of support? Europe’s history – especially Germany’s – is riddled with the wake of destruction following war. Many of the French and German people strongly believe that war does not lead to peace, or the safety and security that The United States so desperately craves after September 11. They have learned the hard way and wish to spare themselves AND their ally the tragedy of this folly. Is pride – the Bush held belief that it is important to hold Saddam Husseim to a set of ethics – worth the enormous price we will all pay when the bodies are counted. Or, is there another way?

But this is the voice of the people and not necessarily the governments that are supposed to represent us.
