Thanks for your response.

The basemap files I got from the ESRI site are .tif.
I can open them with a jpeg/tif file reader. They are
a black and white topographic map of the region
I requested. Its just terrain, no rivers, just bumps for
mountains.

When I set the "file type" pulldown in the "add layer"
tool to "image file", it displays no files (ie., it can't see
the TIF file.)

If Arc explorer needs .shp files, where do I get some
basic freeware basemap just to verify that I have correctly
installed the @#$%^ software? (but, see following)

Oh, I got some census data files from TIGR. They come
in groups of three (basename.dbf, basename.shp, basename.shx).
If I set the "add layer" "file type" to "shapefile", the basename
of the file is selectable. But, if I set the filetype to "image file",
add layer does not recognize any file.

So, my experience is that AE does not recognize tif files,
and if I select a file triplet as a shapefile, no map gets
displayed.

Sorry to be so verbose, but I haven't a clue what is supposed
to be going on. Their documentation is really vague about
basemap files; and the commands available in AE are
pretty minimal.
