OH MY GOD! I had that same guy at my house! My husband was at work and I saw some guy in a checkered suit get out of his car. He looked like a car sales man from the 1970s, and yes, he did smoke cigars. I opened my door and yelled out to him to ask what he was doing. Then he started walking up to my door. I slammed it shut and he rang the door and knocked on it for about 5 minutes. Then he took up the sign and left. I was VERY close to calling the police because this guy was scaring me.
>We have our home for sale by owner, and I thought it
>was bad getting all these annoying calls from agents
>all day long. Well today was the best I've seen. At
>about 9:00 in the morning my wife and I looked outside
>our window to see some guy puting a real estate sign
>in our front lawn. I was infuriated because as far as
>I knew, I didn't list with any agent. I ran out side
>to ask the guy what he was doing and he told me that
>his boss instructed him to put it there. Then he
>yanked my sign out of the lawn!
>Now I was getting really pi**ed when suddenly an older
>guy gets out of the car dressed up in a suit and asked
>if there was some kind of problem. I told him yes
>there was a problem, because I wasn't interested in
>listing with an agent. He opened up a book and said
>that there must have been some kind of mix up because
>his company sent him here to list. I was confused and
>then the guy in a suit told me let's go in the house
>and talk about this. He also said he wanted to use the
>phone so he could call his office and find out what's
>wrong. Once he was in the door, I realized what was
>going on. This was his trick of getting in the door so
>he could give me a presentation filled with all kinds
>of sales pitches. He said that there was a mistake
>made, but he used this mistake as an opportunity to
>tell me why it was a good idea to list with him. I
>ordered him out of the house and threatened to call
>the police. Then the guy acted like I was a jerk for
>ordering him to leave. He got mad and then called his
>worker who, unbeknown to us, was sneaking through the
>house and taking room measurements. I could not
>believe what I was seeing!
>We called the police and filed a compalint, but they
>said that the agent really didn't break any laws. We
>let him in the house and there was still a possibilty
>that there was a mix up and that's why they put a sign
>in the ground and started taking measurements once we
>were in the house. What ever you do, don't let this
>guy in your house to use your phone after he puts a
>sign in the lawn. He smokes cigars and looks like he
>hasn't washed in weeks.
