Just back, and a brilliant time had by all as more of the old Boomtown Rats stuff was given a dusting down.

As Geldof explained, this tour was to promote the forthcoming "Best of the Boomtown Rats" album due out in 3 weeks, which was conceived on the back of the results of an internet survey, with the results throwing up a number of surprises, one of which "When The Night Comes" from 1979 Geldof admits the Boomtown Rats never even played live - yet it finished high. Where better therefore to play it, but in the town that for some reason he has never played before. Only one of the band had, and that was guitarist Johnny Turnball (on lightning form tonight) on the last tour of Ian Dury & Tbe Blockheads in 1999, in his last ever Scottish concert. The track that topped the poll, "Dave" was a single that couldn't even chart. Some other poll toppers like "Mary Of The Fourth Form" have recently been reappearing regularly on the set list - sitting nicely with the stuff from "Sex & Age & Death", which as he told us "won umpteen awards" - in a tone contain half a pint of "and no, I can't believe it either!".

But tonight he finally braved himself to play "Like Clockwork" again (after holding out for years) - which always sounds more menacing live, though he still refuses to play "She's So Modern". "Scream In Vain" replaced "Inside Your Head" of the "S&A&D" stuff played, otherwise it was most of the old favourites that have established themselves as set regulars - "Room 19", "Diamond Smiles" and of course "The Great Song Of Indifference" to start and finish. Needless to say, the biggest cheers of the night came for "Mondays" & "Rat Trap" - t'was ever thus! "Mondays" in particular is a song the performance of which has been inproved by the current line up.

Geldof was shocked by the size of the crowd (full house, bizarre of teenagers, middle agers & grandparents!), and by the requests from the audience. By now Bob ought to be used to the fact going over Hadrien's Wall means getting none of the usual suspects shouted for and a lot of the unusual suspects shouted for; even so, it was something else to go from "The Elephant's Graveyard" to "Never In A Million Years" (which let's face it, he's been looking for an excuse to play - & I'm glad to have provided it!) to "I Never Loved Eva Bruan".

Overall, an excellent night's fun, running for 2 and a half hours non-stop with no support act. Haste ye back!

Shame the Strokes are on the same night in London.
Have to decide by Friday morning.

"When The Night Comes"
"Dave"
"Mary Of The Fourth Form"
"Like Clockwork"
"Diamond Smiles"
"Mondays"
"Rat Trap"
"The Elephant's Graveyard"
"Never In A Million Years"
"I Never Loved Eva Bruan".
And the wonderful
"The Great Song Of Indifference"
