Subject: It's 2003 and I Hear Rats for First Time

First off I AM American, hence culturally deprived, of course! My interest in BG has been sparked not by the music (which I never heard), but the book, which reminded me that there are other altruistic, caring souls in this world, and that people actually can change the world through determination and sheer guts.

Even though at 48 I'm no longer fascinated by music world as I was during my 20's, I was curious to hear the Rats after reading the book. I'm poor -- can't buy new CD's easily -- so checked one of Rhino's 80's compilations out of the local library and heard "Up All Night" in context with familiar music of its time, which was in retrospect a good choice.

It sure was surprising to hear a poppy, pleasant little dance tune. I'd prepared myself for something more ragged, more working class UK. I anticipate going back to the book and paying a little more attention to the sections describing the music.

I absolutely DO NOT REMEMBER ever hearing this song before, even though I was a club regular (in Boston and Los Angeles)between 1974 and 1982. So much for America.

No longer having cassette or vinyl capability, only hard drive, and being that it is illegal to share music via computer (we can't have SIR Bob involved in anything illegal, now, can we?), my exploration of Rats/Geldof music may take a while.

Should I anticipate a pleasant journey? Anyone want to help me devise a listening plan? Opinions and advice welcomed gladly.

Glad to hear you enjoyed Bob's music and related to his thoughts and messages :) welcome to the world of Geldof and enjoy. It's seems you are now learning how to appreciate music in a different way from the way you did in your teens and 20's... that's fantastic.
