I know it's quite disgusting and very cruel the way we treat (non-human) animals. Egg laying hens have it the worst. What is done to them is worse and it's for longer periods of time.
They live their whole lives crammped in tiny little cages (as opposed to just being in them during the transport to slaughter). They are debeaked, becuase the conditions they are kept in are so small and stressful that they peck at one another violently. This "humane" process called debeaking is done without any kind of painkiller and causes the chickens severe amounts of pain, especially when eating. Sometimes it gets so bad they can't eat and they die of starvation. There is also a process called forced molting which they do when a hen is "spent" (through her laying cycle). They take away food and water to shock their body back into another egg laying cycle.
Animals aren't just abused on the way to slaughter and in the slaughter house, factory farming (which makes up about 90% of farming) is appauling. Factory farmers often have said "cages are expensive and animals are cheap" and since the bottom line is money they will cram as many animals as possible into cages, pens, ect... often time animals can't turn around or spread a wing and suffer from several diseases. If they want lean meat they keep them in small enclosures with no room to move around. This is most commonly done to veal calfs.
To see what goes on in factory farms visit http://meetyourmeat.com/ and watch the video, a very common argument I get is that that's in the states the laws are different here and after looking around It seems to me that it is true animal welfare is actually less strict here then in the states, please correct me if I am wrong.
I would also suggest watching chew on this and gold fingers video free me if you want to see more of how animals are treated on factory farms. go to http://www.peta2.com/
There should be a pop up of chew on this and if you scroll down to the bottom of the page it should say click here to watch free me it is a very good video, but very depressing at the start it shows the process of debeaking. About the Mr. Sanders thing (eventhough I am farily certain it is a joke), he has done nothing to me, but the company he started tortures and kills 736 million chickens every year. Please go to http://www.kfccruelty.com/ to learn more and if you are disgusted by this kind of abuse and want to help e mail me at fck_kfc@hotmail.com about the protest this Saturday.
