Forty-four percent of the cars purchased were foreign, however, Toyotahas plants in the south which means employing US citizens.

I have two son-in-laws, both in the steel industry, one as an IT at Mittal and the other in management for US Steel. Both have now recalled laid off workers and US Steel has delayed closing one of their plants deu to demand from auto makers. I read a report of a glass compny suppier recalling workers due to a surge in orders. In our area (NW IN0 both Ford and Chevrolet are reporting record sales, due to the cash for clunkers.

There was a report yesterday saying orders for durable goods orders exceeded expectation.

As for the surge in exisiting and new home sales (again, beating expectations), I have two sons who are builders and we're seeing new starts. A grandson wholives in central IN is a mechanic and they're not suffering for work in that those who can't afford a new car are having repairs made to their current vehicle.

As for the cars turned in under the program, a enteprenuer was interviewed on either MSNBC or CNN and his copany has come up with a chemical formula that's poured into cars. When the car is run for 5-8 seconds, it disables the car. Cars are then taken to the junk yard, compressed and sold to steel companies. NUCor is a big purchaser.
