Subject: I just had...the best damned weekend of my life. (LOTS of text)

Boy Scout Camp To-Pe-Ne-Bee, lovingly called "Tope" for short. Every year, my chapter of Alpha Phi Omega goes there for a weekend and helps fix the place up. That's what I did last weekend. Well, actually it was last Saturday, but it was SO much freakin' fun.

We got there on Friday night, played some card games, got to know the Brothers from another chapter in Michigan who had come down to join us. I still don't know thier names. They introduced themselves as "M", "Bubbles", "Cake", and "Notorious." That's just what we called them all weekend. Only in APO...

But lemme tell ya, playing Capture the Flag in the pitch dark with 2 flashlights per team (each with 8 people) was FUN. Oh wow...game lasted 3 hours. My side was down for most of it. I felt SO bad. We had two people captured within the first 30 minutes, and we never could rescue them. They spent the entire game in the jail.

But that's ok, 'cause I wasn't one of them. I had the CLASSIC capture. I'm sitting behind a tree, watching. I think I see movement, but I'm really not sure, 'cause ya can't see a damn thing in the dark. After about 5 minutes I realize "Yup, it's one of them." The person is slowly creeping up the side. I'm the only person on defence at the moment. I'm on the top of a slgiht bank on the side of gravel road. I waited until she was a few steps past me, and jumped out. It was Bubbles, who was so surprised that she just screamed and screamed. Classic capture. Two of her teammates came running, saw me and started to run back. I chased one of them, my roommate, who slipped and fell. I leaned down to tag him, but then I slipped, fell, and slided about 5 feet past him. He got up, started running off again, only to meet up with one of my teammates, walking back with his own capture. It was SO MUCH FRICKIN' FUN.

Eventually we won, but only 'cause we captured everyone on their team. We never found their flag. Ever. They hid it so well they couldn't find it....even the next day, in broad daylight.

Then came the day of service. I spent most of the day in the dining hall, where 3 of my brethren were sitting in the rafters cleaning them. My job was to wash the rags and hand up new ones. I did this for 8 solid hours, with only a one-hour rest break for lunch. Then we went down and helped pull down some trees. We only intended to pull one down, but it kinda took four more with it. Tip for the future: don't let Engineers do anything.

Then we played Tope-Ball. Imagine a hybrid between Football, Basketball, and Ultimate Frisbee. Basically, ya got the Tope-Ball (a red foam rubber ball that has gone to every Tope). Then you pick a tree in the middle of an open field. The tree is the goal. The idea is to touch the Tope-ball to the trunk of the tree (roots and branches don't count, it's gotta be the trunk).

One team starts with the ball at the tree, they throw the ball to the opposing team. Once someone has the ball, they can take three steps. This is a full-contact game, and the steps DO NOT have to be voluntary. After the 3 steps, involuntary steps are allowable, but they can't take any more on thier own. After the three steps (or before, or during) you can pass or hand-off the ball to a teammate, who then can take three steps, etc. Like Ultimate, when the ball touches the ground, the other team gains possession wherever the thing stops.

BTW, there is no out-of-bounds. Well...not normally. It was a general concensus that the swamp-patch nearby would be a bad place to throw the Tope-ball, but you know...that was just us.

Just so you know, after we (IF we) reform SH, I plan to incite a rebellion and will establish myself as dictator supreme. My first policy will be that all members of SH will be required to also be members of Alpha Phi Omega. This means...if you're in High School, you wait until college, go to a college that has a chapter, and pledge first semester. If you're in college, join the chapter. If you're in a college without a chapter, start an interest group and petition to form a new one.

Sorry, but I stand by this rule. That rule, and that we will have random "bite a person" days. That, and I hereby decree that, despite the fact that it will probably be proven to be uninhabited, we shall declare the planet Jupiter as an enemy of Safe Haven, as well as Alpha Phi Omega.

Speaking of ALpha Phi Omega, GUESS WHAT? My chapter is probably going to submit a bid to host the Fall 2001 Region 6 Conference. Basically, it's a weekend where every chapter in Indiana, Illinios, and Michigan are invited to one place for a weekend of Service and Fellowship. It's A LOT of fun. Anyway, we'll be making a bid to host this little event. Actually...to be a little more specific, I will be making the bid to host this. Which pretty much means that you people have got me until the next semester starts in August.

After that, you will never see me, because I will have to eat, drink, sleep, and breathe "regionals bid." Sorry, but that's the way it's gotta be.

Anyway...I'm off to go eat dinner with some of m'Brothers, so I shall see you all around, ok? Ok.

-Chris
