Ok, when I wrote "1/3" I did NOT mean one-third. I am currently cursing the computer keyboard for not having a division sign.... ::sigh::

1 DIVIDED BY 3 = 0.333....

Therefor 0.333.... times 3 MUST equal 1. Division and multiplication are opposites. They undo each other, or what not.

But if you sit down and multiply 0.333... times 3, you end up with 0.999...

Since we know that 0.333.... times 3 must be equal to 1, 0.999... must then be equal to one. For all of you punching that into calculators, you should know that most calculators will only take up to 8 decimal places.

0.33333333 and 0.333... are NOT the same number.

Another way to prove it...you say that 0.999....and 1 are just really close together? Ok...let's subtract.

1.000.... minus 0.999....

1.0000000000000000....
-0.9999999999999999....
0.00000000000000000....

Seems to me that the difference is zero. If you subtract one number from another and get zero, they must be the same.

The counter arguement to this is that the result will have a 1, after an infinity of zero's, that is. Unfortunately, that one will never exist.

That's like saying "Follow that road for infinity, and you'll get to the restaraunt." There is no restaraunt, because the road never ends. The difference between 1 and 0.999... is an infinity of 0's. The difference is zero, so the two numbers must be one and the same.

When you're dealing with infinity, strange things happen. Just accept it and move on.

::sigh:: Why do people doubt me?
