This subject is tuff to do because I have too many things that I do in a day. With 5-year-old children I would first come in and introduce myself, and ask them what they think a stay at home mommy does? I would ask them if they have any questions for me, and then I would get out some paint and paper and ask them to draw their family, or draw an activity that a mom would do if she stayed at home, or paint an activity that they like doing with their family. I would make sure that I am doing the activity with them and talk with them about what it is their picture is portraying and how it pertains to my job. I would then take out a snack and have everyone talking and asking questions while we eat about the paintings we just did and again explain how this pertains to my job. Then I would like to focus on how I help others and ask them have they ever done this, or have they ever been in a situation where someone had to help them? Then we would talk about this. I would have us do role-plays showing good techniques on how to help others and again talk about how this pertains to what I have to do. I guess to summarize this is that I feel 5 year olds have to do various activities to keep there attention and for them to learn. So, I would play with them in role-plays, paint and do different art projects with them, I’m sure they’ll like a snack but try to do something constructive with that, I also would find a couple of books that is geared toward their age that describes what I do, and remember to have fun while trying to make them learn what it is that I do.

Nine year olds are in the third grade usually. They have an attention span that is a little longer than kindergarteners. I would do some of the same things that I did above. I would do role-plays (however I would be directing more rather than playing with), I would read one story that was at their age level, I would also have an art project, and have a discussion and question time. I might take them on a field trip where they would be helping the public in some type of community service project and do the activity they are doing as well and talk with them about it and explain how and why they are helping others and how it pertains to my role.

High School Freshman is usually way too happy to be able to say they are in high school and usually are very active with friends. I would try to remember what I did in high school and what I listened to and what I didn’t. I think this would be something that I felt wasn’t too preachy, if I felt I was made to do something I wouldn’t do it, and if food and money was there I was there. So, with my profession I would go to the students who are in home economics because it would already pertain what it is that I do, however who ever wanted to come within the amount of kids I was able to handle could. I would make up a Saturday event where they had a small breakfast and lunch provided. I would talk with them about who I am, what I do, what the activities are we’re going to do, and what I hoped to accomplish (very briefly over breakfast) hopefully I would have a few other volunteers to help me and who shared my ideas. I would then have different flyers to hand out that would give them information on home based businesses, internet sites that gave information about health, sewing, home improvement, decorating, gardening, etc things that homemakers do. I would also give information about volunteering. We would then go do a community service activity where at the end of this day they would receive a gift certificate at department store and receive an award of some kind. I think it is important to again do the activity with the one’s you are teaching and having an open communication explaining, asking questions, listening, and answering questions.

With high-school seniors I would do pretty much the same things but would like to add in things about STDS and teen pregnancies and different things that teach them that being an adult isn’t “all that and a bag of chips” if they aren’t responsible and take care of their business as well as they can. I would try very hard in doing this with out being preachy.

To my fellow students in class, well I can imagine that they already have experienced some of the things I have, but I would try to focus on some of the important things to me and things that I think some might not have been through. I would also explain what I do with the terminology that you would use in the business world that way I can come to their level and they can understand mine. I would still use visual effects, have the audience involved doing activities, share resources, have food available, and some type of recognition.

I guess in doing this I feel that some of the important things in order to keep your audience’s focus on what it is that you trying teach them are by using different techniques within the time period allocated. This meaning audience participation, asking questions of the audience, allowing the audience to ask you questions, visual aides, music aides, age specific language and reading guides, role-plays, art projects etc. You also need a lot of preparation and research the subjects in which you are speaking to. Step inside their shoes and try to figure out what they might already know so that you don’t spend a lot of time with something they already know. Also, use age appropriate materials, aides, and language when doing a presentation.
