Well, I would like to say that I would not leave a voice mail to a family member the way my own brother left one to me. He said this is Bob in Albuquerque, NM returning your call. You can reach me at 515-123-4567 between the hours of
6PM and 8PM in the evening. I was like ok I'm not a client I'm your sister. It hurt me actually that I would get a message like that and haven’t left a message again since then.

So, with family and friends I'm informal. All I say is, Hi! This is Emily, Just called to chat and wanted to know how things are going your way. I'll be home from 6-7PM-tonight talk to you then. Bye.

With my boss it would depend on the situation, how large the company is, and how much we interact with each other.

Actually if it wasn't family or friends and it was business I would first listen to what the person wanted. If they say leave a name and number that is probably all I'll leave unless in was something that needed immediate attention. Then I would state that this needed immediate attention and brief them and restate my name and number.

If the person says what I say leave a name, number, and brief message then I usually leave something like this… Hello, my name is Emily Weaver I’m calling about the information packet you sent me in the mail and would like to discuss the details with you. You can reach me this evening between 4PM and 6PM at home. The phone number is 913-341-0763 and again my name is Emily Weaver my phone number is 913-341-0763 thank you.

I was told that it is good to state your name first and then the message second rather than the phone number because someone in a hurry would just get the name and number and call back, when they might not have needed to, waited to call when it was an emergency, or not have known the context at all and can make of fool of themselves on the phone if some one said oh you got my message about so and so, what do you think of the proposal I said in the message. I was also told that it is good to repeat your name as well as the phone number especially if you’re including other names in your message. This will remind them whom it is they are calling back.

With my spouse I’m even more informal than with friends and family because he already knows my voice so he already knows who is on the message. I’ll say things like I just called to say I love you! Hey, do you have time to listen to my letter to this client? Do you have any suggestions for dinner tonight? I guess at times I don’t even say hi and start in with a question or some type of statement and sometimes I don’t say thank you or bye. I guess I need to work on this. I will ask him how he feels about this tonight and see if he ever thinks about this. I hope he doesn’t think I’m mean because of it or that I ruin his day when he gets a message from me.

With children I never thought about this one. If they were my own I would say This is mommy I’m over at Betty’s give me a call there the phone number is 913-555-1818.

If they were not my own I think I would leave it at, this is Mrs. Weaver can you please give me a call at 913-555-1818 again this is Mrs. Weaver my phone number is 913-555-1818 thank you.
