I do think that it is very important to develop bilingual communication skills. I have heard a statistic that by 2020 English will be the second language in America. I don't know if this is true or not, but I know that in my work I have a consistent need to learn Spanish as well as sign language. Although sign language is typically not thought of being a bilingual issue, it can sometimes be important. It is very difficult and I feel very inadequate when I can not converse adequately with someone of another culture, particularly children because I know they are frustrated anyway by their lack of communication.
