I would definitely utilize the telephone. Perhaps even my boss's cell phone. Since the matter is urgent, e-mail would not be appropriate. Besides, chances are even if my boss stated that she will check her messages, she probably won't be able to check in for e-mails on a regular basis. Therefore, I wouldn't want to leave such an urgent message to sit and wait in her inbox until she got a chance to read my message.

90 percent of the time, business people leave a forwarding number to where they can be reached in an emergency. This would be the same number that should be used in this situation.

Another benefit to using the phone is that once you have your boss on the phone, you can get immediate feedback. He or she can inform you directly what you will need to do to fix the situation (if possible) or direct you to someone else in the work environment who can assist until the boss returns.
