Reply: My answer is probably not a surprise to anyone, butI feel it is absolutely NOT important to consider ebonics as a language to be taught in our public school system. In a society where clear, understandable communication is a necessity, we should not promote this in any way. It is bad enough that students have a difficult time trying to learn to speak with proper grammar with all of the improper usage we hear every day. Sometimes I think if I hear "I seen" one more time I will scream.
Where did it come from? Didn't it stem from a group on the west coast that was concerned with racial discrimination?
If one feels that ebonics is an important part of their culture, I can respect that, but don't force it into the public school system, or demand that teachers learn it.
