If I was taliking to a group of 5 year olds, I would focus on eye contact, but include visual graphics. 5 year olds are still innocent enough to where they seem to hinge on every word that you say, but if you don't acknowledge their reaction, they would be the quickest to lose interest in your message because they have a shorter attention span.
For 9 year olds, keep the visual aids, and include audience participation. At this age it seems kids look at everything as a competition, and they are alwasy eager to be the first to answer.
For high school Freshmen, I would point out that they have crossed an important theshhold in their lives. They are no longer grade-schoolers, and are becoming young adults. It's time for them to look at life a little differently.
For high school Seniors, it seems that the speaker at every commencement exercise emphasizes how the graduating class is "going forth....". There may be a reason for this, because at this age, you try to point out that all through their education process, their teachers have tried to develop their "field of vision", and this is an ongoing process throughout their lives. It will be important for them to continue to grow and learn.
As for my peers at Rockhurst University, I know that we are all trying to achieve that goal of obtaining a college degree. So far, we've accomplished things in life. That's why trying to go to school with everything else going on in our lives, is like the act on the old Ed Sullivan Show where the guy had about ten plates spinning on top of the sticks. Every time another plate is added, we have to back and refresh the spin on one or more plates.
