A Harrowing Experience at the F4 Concert-ULTRA,Philippines
A Harrowing Experience at the “The Event” F4 Concert
14 Sept 2003
I was one among the thousands of fans of F4 and San Chai who trooped to the ULTRA to watch their concert yesterday. Since we already had tickets worth P3,000 each, me and my friends went to the venue at 6pm, thinking there will be designated entrances for the different price ranges. Like others who had previous ticket reservations, we did not see the need to come at a much earlier time. We wanted convenience so we did not mind paying for a more expensive ticket. That came with the package, right?
To our horror, there was only one entrance, regardless if your ticket was P10,000,P5,000 to the cheapest at P500.Having no choice, we lined up for 2 hours. We still kept our hopes up and tried enjoying the wait. Upon reaching the entrance, though, it was where our nightmare began.
People were rushing in quickly to the main field but there was a blockade made by the security. Before I knew it, I was caught in the middle of a sea of people trying to enter the open field. We were slowly being crushed! People were starting to shout, plead and cry for help. They were begging the security personnel to let us in. I felt as if bricks of people were pinning me to death. The crowd was getting restless. Panic set in and I couldn’t breathe anymore. My feet were not touching the ground anymore. That was how tight others were pressing on me.
I managed to be composed at first but I eventually broke down. An ambulance brought me to the Medical City were I continued hyperventilating. We later found out that there were a number of concert audience who were rushed to the emergency room too. Well, I became stable after some time and my x-ray results were negative. Though I was discharged after that, I am still reeling from the emotional and physical trauma. It was a scary and harrowing experience. Scenes of stampede in football games abroad or the Ozone tragedy hit me. Not to mention paying P3,000 for nothing since I did not even see a single number in the concert.! I know it will take some time before I dare be in such an occasion again.
Bottomline-----the organizers of the audience failed to put system in such a big event. I did not see any ushers or any semblance of order. We did not know where to go! Apparently, the P500 ticket holders and others who came in earlier occupied seats intended for the V.I.P and Patron sections. Unfair is an understatement!!!
The next time concerts in that magnitude will be staged, they should see to it that they have enough people to oversee logistical concerns. I went to big activities like EDSA 1& 2and the World Youth Day but I did not experience such chaos. We should be conscious about this before anything regrettable happens.
Events organizers should not just be concerned with raking in money. They have a responsibility to give the audience their money’s worth and to look after their safety. I do not know where to contact the Big Slim Productions who produced the show. Can your office assist me on this please ? The least they can do is give me a refund. Two of my friends who likewise failed to watch the concert because they were at the hospital with me should also get their refund.
For those who enjoyed the concert, well and good. Heard it went out fine consequently but was not up to par with the well-prepared and grandiose F4 concert previously held in other countries. But I hope you realize that others like me were not that lucky.
Cathy
P.S The Philippine Daily Inquirer, Phil.Star and People's journal ran news articles about what happened. I am one of the victims of the stampede.(Sept.15,2003)

ABS-CBN is in a better position to give you the whereabouts of Vigslim production. It is just fair to get a refund and for them to answer your hospital bills. Frankly, it was a fun evening for everyone but we struggled hard to reach the entrance as well. Yes, business people should go beyond revenues and profits. Ken and Vanness did not even know that tickets were sold at skyrocketing prices...Hope you are well and ok...I bet..this will serve the organizers a hard lesson.

Dear Mia:
Thank you for the message.I have been receiving encouraging words from friends and family too. Although I am moving on with my usual life,I have yet to totally shake off the emotional and mental trauma. I still agonize whenever I remember that near death, frightening experience.
By chance, do you know the email address of F4 or the people behind the artists?Hope they get to know what their followers in the Philippines went through just to see them.
Thanks again@@@
