Subject: Need help with my dog

I have a 1 year old Rott Weiler. I know i have made a lot of training mistakes but in some areas she is great and i can see she has a great deal of potential. I have a couple of immediate problems and i really need advice.

1. She is an outside dog and when our car pulls into the yard she jumps on the doors and i have to get out and hold her so she will not knock the kids down. I have recently read that i should not kneel to handle her because it gives her more status as an alpha dog. I am thinking of keeping a squirt gun of water in the car and having the window rolled down before we pull in so i can squirt her face when she jumps up.

2. She challenges my authority. When i come out if she is behaving well with other people around she will get very excited and is less inclined to behave. (We live in Africa and i have a lot of people in and out of the property, especially since my husband's office is on the property too).

3. She is way too bouncy with the children. Some days she is reasonable but today she jumped on my friends daughter and scared the poor girl very much.

I would like to keep her more contained. We do have an area which has shade and sun, is walled off, and is concrete (no grass). It was not made for dogs but i do keep her there a few hours every morning as she was getting too worked up when the office trucks were coming and going. I would like to keep her there more but am not sure how much is too much. I don't want her to lose her social skills (limited as they are) and i don't want her to end up strangely warped but i do feel she needs to be contained more. I don't have a crate for her so if she behaves badly i put her in this area for at least ten minutes and it does seem to help. Trouble is she is not trained to go there on her own, we first have to catch her, leash her and take her there.

I spend a lot of time on this dog but it's obviously not enough. There is no trainer within a reasonable drive of where i live. I have to do this on my own and it has to be done now, but i'm so frustrated. I love the breed and as i said, i think this dog has a great deal of potential but i spend more time feeling upset than happy with her at the moment.
