[Saskatoon, SK] Although there was some talk that the Saskatoon Silos might move their first pick, and the first selection in the 2006 GWHL Draft, the rumors did not appear to be serious. But that is exactly what happened today, as the Silos and Whitehorse Warriors completed a swap of draft picks, plus one player.
Going to the Warriors is the first pick overall in the coming draft, plus prospect Derek Roy. In return, the Silos receive the Warriors first pick in the 2006 Draft (fourth overall), Charlottetown's first pick in this draft (seventh overall), and the Warriors third round pick in the 2008 GWHL Draft.
Some in the media expressed some surprise that the highly regarded prospect Roy would be moved, but Silos GM Ken McKenna gave the appearance of someone that felt confident with his decision.
"No question, Derek is a good prospect", agreed McKenna. "But we have good depth at center, with most of our centers being in their mid-20's or younger. I felt that this allowed us the freedom to move a guy like Roy. Also, we have several picks in the next couple of drafts, so I feel confident that our scouts can add quality depth to that position."
As for the two first round picks, the GM felt there was no harm in moving down a couple of slots in the first round.
"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder in this draft", explained McKenna. "No player really stands out head and shoulders above the others. We have 7 or 8 guys pretty much rated equally, so now we get to select two of them instead of one."
The Silos now have five selections in this draft- two in the first round, two in the second, and one compensation pick in the third.
