Montreal, PQ - The Montreal Marauders made their official franchise tag player Evgeni Nabokov today, ending weeks of rumors as to whom would be tapped.

"We looked at all of our free agents and decided where we had the biggest liability," explained GM Sean Gallagher, "we expect to have bids on a few of our players, but in goal, we felt we couldn't afford to lose Nabokov.

For his excellent goaltending, winner of the 2005 Sawchuk and Dryden Awards, Nabokov signed a rumored 5 year pact. The actual terms of the contract were not released.

In other free agency news, the Marauders confirmed that offers were tendered to nine other players, while RFA Paul Kariya was not tendered an offer, making him an Unrestricted Free Agent.

"Kariya's contract was simply too cumbersome for us. This solution should satisfy Paul's people and is a good move for us."

As for new acquisitions, Gallagher maintained that the Marauders would not be big players.

"We may attempt to land the odd role player, but I hate overpaying for a guy with picks and cash when it's so much cheaper to grow them in your own system. It works for some people, it's just not our style."
