This years waivers are a bunch of has beings and overpaid stars. There is not much to pick and choose from so there may not be a lot of activity in this year’s draft. Some notables would be high paid Zhamnov who could improve a scoring winger’s stats. Passing defenceman Mathieu Schneider may get picked up by a team needing a point man on the Power Play. Goaltenders Manny Fernandez and Tommy Salo may get a look at. Otherwise the draft is full of grinders and old vets. Not many teams will expose the skill they already have for this group of wannabes. Following is a top few of each position and my prediction of the first 6 picks. I included the 6th because it’s my pick.

Waiver Draft Review

Goalies

Vesa Toskala(73)
Tommy Salo(79)
Manny Fernandez(75)
Garth Snow(76)

Pick 1-Steeltown

Steeltown only protected 12 players so you can be sure they will be active in the waiver draft. There team is pretty solid in net with Turco and they have a few good forwards to depend on. They are short a defenceman and have a lot of salary cap so the prediction for the first pick in the waiver draft will be Mathieu Schneider his high PC and PA should help Steeltown put some pucks in the net.

Pick 2- Saskatoon

Saskatoon only protected 17 players so it’s reasonable to say they will be making a selection as well. The team is full of depth but my belief is they will pluck one of Whitehorse’s centers, my guess is Zhamnov. Though his salary is high he would greatly improve this team’s chances and with a little bit of tinkering Saskatoon could easily fit him in the budget.

Pick 3 – Toronto

Toronto protected the full 18 players so there is some speculation as to whether they will make any moves in the draft. If they did make the pick they could leave tough guy Donald Brashear and pick up a more skilled forward like Gratton or Mccammond. Both these guys would definitely help out Toronto. However they are a pretty set team and may not make any moves.

Pick 4 – Charlette Town

They protected all 18 players and GM is out scouting players so the prediction is they won’t make a move and pass.

Pick 5 – B.C.

B.C. Also protected all 18 players and probably will pass as well because they would have to expose a pretty good player and the waiver draft players are mostly overpaid or lesser rated.

Pick 6 – London

London only protected 16 and will be active in the waiver draft the first selection may be a goaltender. Speculation is to whether it will be Fernandez or Snow. They have also advertised the need for a defenceman so they may also take a look at Hedican and Simpson.
