Montreal, PQ - In a season that is expected to be successful, even the pre-season is meaningful. At least that is the message coming from Montreal GM Sean Gallagher's office.

"We have gotten better every year since I got here, and this year we expect to improve on last year."

That can mean only one thing, as the upstart Marauders fell in Game 7 of the Conference Finals last year. Gallagher has clearly set the goal of reaching the Hoser Cup Finals for his team.

"Your mind races when the team you took to 7 wins the Cup," said Gallagher, "how close were we?"

Bringing back essentially the same team, with a couple new additions on the fourth line, Montreal has seen mixed results in the pre-season.

"Our dfense hasn't been as, well, defensive as I'd hoped, but the scoring lines have started to click. I was worried about the that top line at first."

The top line of Bertuzzi, Richards and Tkachuk was scoreless through the forst two games before breaking out in the last two.

"We'll still mix and match to see what happens, but it'll be hard to separate the guys on line two."

Marleau, Sullivan and Parrish have held their own, despite their second-tier status.

"We've benefitted from the other teams pressuring that top line," said Sullivan, "so we've had some more room to operate. If the other teams concentradte on us, the top line sems to get loose. I'd like to keep playing with Patty [Marleau] and Parry [Mark Parrish]. But that's not my call."

The Marauders continue their experiments tomorrow in Halifax.
