Subject: Draft lottery results and mock draft

The GWHL draft lottery was held recently and for a change, the team that was supposed to get the first overall pick actually did. Of course, the team that owned the pick had already traded it, as did all other 7 non-playoff teams who traded the picks to teams that did make the playoffs! The winner was Victoria who managed to hold onto the #1 overall pick, beating out Halifax who they just lost the league championship to. Confused?

Edmonton and Halifax will no doubt enjoy the draft day as both teams have 3 picks in the first top 10 and if you want to look at the real lottery winner, then Edmonton is your team. The owner of Whitehorse and Steeltown’s picks, they were able to move up to 2nd and 3rd overall where two quality players await them. In what should prove to be the deepest draft since the first ever league draft, Edmonton, Halifax, and Ottawa with 3 picks in the top 13 are going to improve dramatically overnight.

If you asked for the scout’s top 10 list right now, every list would be different. There is no consensus on the top 10 or even the top pick. Depending on your team’s immediate needs, there is no doubt a player to improve you immediately. If you need a goal scoring forward, Eric Staal, Nathan Horton, Nikoli Zherdev, Thomas Vanek, Milan Michalek, Jeff Carter, and Mike Richards are all sure fire stars in waiting. If you need a solid D man to build your team around look no further than Brent Burns, Ryan Suter, Brent Seabrook, Brayden Coburn, and some other player you may have heard of…Dion Phanuef! You need a goalie? Got one of them too by the name of Marc-Andre Fleury.

The riches in this draft are embarrassing and no doubt that this draft will go down in history as one of the best classes ever. The two biggest questions going into this draft is how do you decide which player you want and ask yourself how on earth did you ever trade that pick? Good luck to everyone and happy picking.

Draft order for the top 10, the result of the draft lottery, and mock draft:

Team Pick
Vic (Tor)1 Toronto finished 16th overall – Eric Staal
Edm (Ste)2 Steeltown finished 12th overall, up 3 spots – Dion Phaneuf
Edm (Whi)3 Whitehorse finished 11th overall, up 3 spots – Jeff Carter
Hal (Yel)4 Yellowknife finished 13th overall – Nikoli Zherdev
Ott (Chr)5 Charlottetown 14th overall, down 2 spots – Mike Richards
Hal (Sas)6 Saskatoon finished 15th overall, down 4 spots – Nathan Horton
Win (Mon)7 Montreal finished 10th overall – Milan Michalek
Edm (Cal)8 Calgary finished 9th overall – Thomas Vanek
Yel (Ldn)9 Made playoffs no movement - Corey Perry
Hal (Edm)10 Made playoffs no movement - Brent Seabrook
