The Story of Bachok Tukang Tebang Nyior

When I was in school I remember very well one man whose reputation for climbing coconut trees beat everyone else. His name was Bachok and in the coastal areas of Kuala Terengganu more particularly Tanjong area he was known as Bachok Panjak Nyor. I am not sure of his origin - may have been Celebes (Bugis) or Jawa. But he certainly was not local judging by his Malay accent. But our classmates who were residents of Tanjong in those days like Wan Adnan, Osman Ngah, Wan Abdullah Haji Wan Hassan, Daud Mohd, Alias Mohd and may be even Hassan Ali (Seberang Takir) may have known of him even more.

Bachok's speciality was coconut tree - picking fruits or cutting down the tree but he was well known for TEBANG NYOR. Tanjong area being coastal had many coconut trees which sometime needed cutting for some reason or another. Those days (even in some cases today) manfolks went about wearing only KAIN BATEK, nothing else. We should imagine how Bachok went about doing his job with his KAIN BATEK losely tied to his body at the waist level.

He had tremendous skill in climbing needing nothing else to assist him except his parang. He would start by cutting off all the fruits and leaves and then cutting down the trunk in short lengths from top to bottom.

Today I wonder if there is still a man who has the skill of Bachok. Perhaps Ramli Abdullah and Daud should find out.
