Growing up, my parents did not place restrictions on me as far as messages or models. Although I did have a brief tomboy phases, I am overall a prissy girly girl. I played with whatever toys I wanted, whether it would be G.I. Joe’s, Barbie’s, water guns, etc. I have a lot of cousins my age growing up and most of our play was unisex, and maybe the occasional football games and house. I did not mind getting dirty, but it had to be a good reason to and it depended on my hair and what I had on.
My mother did introduce me to the beauty shop at a very early age (I was just a toddler) and I got my hair and nails done every two weeks and our routine was shopping every Saturday morning. She did teach me to never be afraid to sweat and a little dirt won’t hurt, unless you are out at a nice place. As for my dad, I really did not have a gender role in his eyes. I went fishing with him, yard work, (only voluntary) and tagged along with him and his friends. However, my dad always worked two or more jobs, which I have the mentality that men should be the provider of the home no matter what, even if the wife is working also. As for household chores, I did pretty much everything to make the house look nice and clean, expect take out the trash. Honestly, my first time taking out trash was at my high school job at Quizno’s!
If I were a boy, the messages and roles probably would not have been as easy going. There would have been slightly stricter roles and messages, but my parents raised brother and me to be self sufficient individuals regardless of gender.
