I grew up with my mother and a stepfather. My mother worked a lot and my stepfather was not the nicest man in the world, therefore, I tried to stay clear of him. I learned a lot of messages from my brother whom I spent a lot of time with growing up. I was a tomboy if you will because of the social learning I took from him. As far as chores, my stepfather delegated many chores for my brother and I to do. Overall, I did not see a gender difference in the chores we did. My stepfather just wanted everything done in a timely manner. Therefore, I mowed the grass, raked the leaves, took out the trash, dusted the furniture, vacuumed, and babysat during the summer when my mother and my stepfather worked. Basically, chores were done by my brother and myself by whoever could get to them first and keep our stepfather from having to say anything to us. Looking back I may not have learned specific gender roles from my parents that really stuck out, however, I learned about hard work, independence, accountability, and responsibility. All of which have helped mold me into the strong female I am today.
