My family were actually very traditional in gender roles during my childhood. My mother did work a part time job until she left on maternity leave with me. She did not return to work until I was seven and my brother had entered kindergarten. Dad's role was that of breadwinner and head of the household. He and mother no doubt discussed big decisions but he ultimately had the final say and unless she had strong objections, they would stick by it. Mom was responsible for most of the childrearing and the day to day household tasks. Dad, however, would help out unless he was just too tired (at times he would work 60-80 hours a week). Most of the work done outside our house (i.e. yard work) Dad would do on the weekends. It sounds a little 1950s but my father was raised by his mother and I suspect that he wanted to rebuild that 'Leave to Beaver' home he grew up watching on television.
