I know this is a pretty old post, 2003?? I was wondering if I should reply. But I have watched TB/X and I don't see the similarities or so they say... *nothing you wont see in other jap anime*
I watched Yami before TB but you see, the story pretty much differs... TB is a story of a group of people trying to save the world *A pretty broad story range by the way, a little to painful to watch for me, but thats my opinion* Yami is about personal struggles, its not even about people affecting other people *what I like about it is that the story remains truthfull to the main character TSUZUKI-san, and does not intertwine with other character stories... pretty clean work, nice* Yami is not saving the world or other people, kinda an anti-hero story like saiyuki (gensomaden saiyuki I mean...) It's about inner demons... TB was a pretty good anime considering the year it was produced, one of the best of its time, but Yami is also another masterpiece independent from that... *I prefer stories saving themselves rather saving some greater purpose... it relates more in reality, survival.*
Here's the catch... I've been a Yami addict for a while now and if there is any similarities or connections it's this I've found.

Muraki: Inspired character from Hanibal Lecter *Both doctors??* Watch it and it's so close you can taste it, even the seeming demure/elite effect he's creating. Even the way he flirts... just loves to play games. (The only difference is *and surely there is unless he wont be unique to himself* MOTIVE, Lecter has a higher purpose for society while MURAKI does it for himself/REVENGE *darn that Saki, hate him so*

HISOKA: His favorite book is CRIME AND PUNISHMENT from the manga, *read it yet? if you did you'll find it so YAMI NO MATSUEI!!!* I belive much of the anime was inspired by that book, the author must have been a big fan... I don't know might be coincidence?? But to hard to ignore, judge by yourself. Muraki's concept on life and death?? HISOKA's PERSONA IS SO MUCH LIKE THE MAIN CHARACTER WOW!!! And Tsuzuki also, the close friend of the main character of crime and punishment is a pushy very nosy do-gooder, who just likes to poke into the life of this annoyed friend of his.

Note: I've heard Hisoka was supose to be the main character of Yami, but the author quickly changed to Tsuzuki who was only a supposed suporting character. *Notice how long Hisoka's "I'll get my own shiki" story has in the manga... too long, Sensei Muraki?? Where are you??* It was a really good call, nice ^_^ Tsuzuki as a main really flared the story to new heights!

Well to conclude, weather it is hisoka's relationship, the cherry rape scene *You can't illiminate a cherry blossom from any anime you know, it's a japs trade mark*, the shikigami, or muraki's blood licking thing *By the way, that I belive is a pyscho's manalism... It goes a long way back baby! Just read about the history of real life psychos especialy that dating 19th century and up, you'll get what I mean* If your going to base such claims with too little unproven facts it would discredit the originality of the author who I belive is so COOL! I write too so I know what it feels to think your stealing others ideas, but a writer uses these same ideas to create something new.

I was entoxicated by Yami, drunk by it not because its jap anime but because it portrays life at its best... Tsuzuki can never be more human than what he is in the anime. This is from an analytical perspective, the concept is as deep as Gensomaden Saiyuki which talks of freedom, Tsuzuki talks of accepting life. Yami digs deep into you, so you shouldn't just watch the story ploting but the characters as individuals. TB is another story and should be credited also for its INDIVIDUAL artistic concept, the two should be seperated.

Hey, if it got me to read a literary masterpiece such as CRIME AND PUNISHMENT *which now is my favorite book* then its got to be deep.

You just got to watch it. MURAKI is the coolest antagonist of all time! *and I'm not even sure if he's a real antagonist... really complicated -_-*

(If you want more of my opinions on Yami you can e-mail me theresa19842001@yahoo.com or if you have new info on yami... BY GOD PLEASE... ANY NEW DEVELOPMENTS??)
