You may not want to hear this, but yes your decision was selfish. So what if the gal had a slight lack of manners,if your son was happy he should be allowed to choose who he likes. Family pride is a good thing, but sounds like you are much more worried about what everyone is going to think about "you" if you did allow this person to marry into the family.
Just be wary that your son could ignore your wishes and go elope with the girl just to spite you.
