Although some *water* based fluid smoke machines do leave an oily
residue, this is not always the case. For example, one of my Martin Fogger Junior 700s
leaves virtually no oil anywhere - not even on the floor in front
of the nozzle from where the smoke exits the machine. However,
smoke machines with a high output do tend to leave more residue
as a rule of thumb.

The two things which cause noise in smoke machines are the pump
and the nozzle which the smoke comes out of. Although it's
possible to near silence the fluid pump through high quality
components and dampening, the nozzle will always make a fairly
loud hissing noise when creating smoke. A way to get around this
is to use ducting, with the machine in another room to isolate
the sound. However, this does affect the distance the smoke
is 'thrown' when the smoke exits the tubing, so some sort of fan
or compressed air set-up is advisable.

Depending on the effect you need, dry ice or liquid nitrogen
smoke machines do not create a hissing noise and usually use
ducting to distribute the smoke away from the machine itself (which is
often rather large).

Hope this helps!
