Henri Charriere was born in 1906, in the Ardeche, a region in
the south of France. His father was the master of a village
school and his mothers death at a young age, hit him hard. Henri
gained his nick name Papillon (for the butterfly tattoo on his
chest) during his military service with the navy. It was here he
also began to make criminal contacts.
After finishing his Military service Charriere moved to Paris
and became a well known underworld figure as a petty thief and
safe cracker.
At the age of twenty five he was framed for a murder he didnot
commit and sentenced to a life in the penal colony's of French
Guiana. Papillon swore he would not serve this injust sentence.
After forty two days in French Guiana he escaped for the first
time travelling a thousand miles across in an open boat. During
this escape he was helped by a leper colony and lived with an
Indian tribe where he fathered some children.
Recaptured he suffered two years in solitary confinement on a
starvation diet.After nine escapes, suffering the worst type of
brutality and despair, Papillion final gained his freedom. He
became a citizen of Venezuela and had many more adventures
becoming involved with some of the goldminers,bankrobbers and
revolutionaries.It was during this time he met the love of his
life, Rita who was to become his wife.
In 1967 an earthquake hit Caracus the capital of Venezuela,
Papillon a night club owner was ruined and it was then that he
sat down to write the book Papillon which became a world wide
best seller.
Papillon became a celebrity pictured with Brigette Bardot, he
even had a big role in a movie and also wrote another book
called Banco.
In 1973, the same year they began filming his life story with
Steve McQueen playing the lead role, Papillion this man with
immense will and soul died, leaving behind his wife and
daughter.
