Subject: What's more important?

The baseball players are striking because they don't want a salary cap. That's pretty much the deal. Why don't they want a salary cap? Because it limits team spending. To be honest, it's awfully hard for me to be too upset when a player making the minimum salary ($400,000/year) complains about not having enough money. Well, my wife and I make about 1/10th of that, and we actually have to work for a living. We have 2 kids, rent a house, and all the other things. I would give almost anything to make half a million dollars a year- especially to play a game.

Point number 2: the salary cap in the NFL and NBA has made a difference in competition. I don't follow the NBA, but as an avid NFL fan, I can tell you that the NFL is very exciting. Games are pretty evenly matched, teams are pretty even, and coaches and GM's have to know what they're doing. The salary cap forces teams to find young talent, and then sign veterans to long term deals (to reduce the money they'd have to sign them for later).

So: a salary cap increases the product while limiting salaries somewhat, but helps to increase contract length. Do you want a long, multi-million dollar deal with incentives and a signing bonus?

I do.
