Saturday Last men out

The Jever Blade Challenge is the official German Inline Cup national series. The event takes place in five different cities and regroups some marathons and some traditional races. It was the case this week-end passed in Bochum (Ruhr). The organisation proposed a “last man out” race on Saturday evening. The teams of Rollerblade took the start of this event.

On a short but technical circuit in the city centre (about 350 metres, two straight lines and two tight corners), the women had to skate 25 laps and the men 40. In the women’s race, Tanya Dobbin (Rollerblade Australia), Nina Spilger and Evelyn Kalbe (Rollerblade Germany) were opposed to the Powerslide and the Maple Fratelli teams. Finally, the Belgium Hilde Goovaerts (Maple) finished first in a sprint and Evelyn Kalbe at a close third place.

In the men’s race, the World team of Rollerblade, with Fabien Rabeau, Wouter Hebbrecht, Shane and Kalon Dobbin, made the show and enchanted the numerous spectators. They finished at the six first places, with Robert Hirch (Rollerblade Germany) and Sebastian Müller (Powerslide), whereas Vincent Esnault and Sébastien Sergent (Rollerblade France) were the last eliminated (seven and eight). Kalon escaped two laps before the arrival and finished alone, about ten meters before his brother Shane. Wouter took the bronze on the line right behind Müller.

Sunnday Bochum Blade Express Marathon

It was a 1st through 5th finish for Rollerblade at the Bochum stage of the Jever Blade Challenge. Rollerblade’s International skaters Wouter Hebbrecht and Shane Dobbin placed first and second while French Rollerblade’s Vincent Esnault crossed the line for the third placement. In the women’s race it was Belgium’s Hidle Goovaerts who was first ahead of Powerslide’s Dorothee Schaupp and Rollerblade’s Michaela Neuling placed third.

As the skaters arrived in Bochum they quickly saw that they would need their climbing legs, with the course having five climbs, legs and lungs would be pushed to the limit. The 42km circuit led the skaters from the start line to the bottom of the first hill, there they had to complete 2 and half laps of a loop, this loop being up and over the hill. On the final decent the skaters took a right hand turn, which left 3km to the line, the final 200m of the race was up hill.

The Way It Was
The gun sounded at 10.45am Sunday morning, the 260 men left the starting line knowing a hard day of climbing was ahead. The first time up the hill there was a steady pace set at the front but no one was willing to open up full gas as they had to 4 more climbs to complete. The second time up the hill Shane made an attack off the front, this caused the Fila team to come to the front of the peleton and chase, after they caught the pack remained together until the beginning of the third hill. Not long after the turn around the French RB duo of Esnault and Sebastian Sergent attacked hard breaking away from the main pack, working well together they soon opened a large gap. Seeing this Wouter burst from the pack and quickly crossed over to the French duo. Nearing the top of the hill, Fila’s Baptiste Grandgirard attacked and attempted to chase the trio, Shane quickly covered this move. As Grandgirard faded Shane attacked and crossed over to the lead skaters, Grandgirard drifted back to the main group.
The four lead skaters worked well together and continued to open up the gap between themselves and the main pack, as the four took the right hand turn and skated the final 3km they had a 2 min lead on the peleton. Esnault lead the escapes into the final sprint, he initiated the sprint 400m from the line, Shane and Wouter made their move and passed Esnault 200m from the finish. At the line it was Wouter who took the victory followed by team mate Shane, Esnault took the third place ahead of Sergent. Rollerblade continued a good day with Kalon Dobbin winning the pack sprint and taking the fifth placement.
