The Edexcel Applied ICT course is a complete farce. Last year, due to lack of leadership from edexcel on their new course thousands of students marks got moderated and only 33 out of 3000 ended up with A's. Thats 1%, probably makign it the "hardest" A level possible to do...

This year we've got a unit 7 exam based on Microsoft Access. The exam time frame is over 3 or so weeks and its a 10 hour exam. Now I have a very very good ICT teacher who is clued up, he wont provide us with data unless its allowed and he keeps an eye on teachers forums to see what others are doing. Unfortunately not all teachers are the same and due to Edexcel badly naming something on their website, the data for the exam (meant to be first accessed in exam time) was handed out to hundreds of students weeks in advance of the exam. Now this data is freely in the public domain waiting for us students to look at it and use it. Also the exam 3 week time frame means some people have almost completed the exam before I've even started it. Since I've been keeping an eye on student forums I know every single question on the paper and what you have to do and I haven't even seen it yet. I'm a pretty decent student so I don't really need the extra help but when you can literally do a whole exam before you go in, who's not going to do it??? As well as this on some student forums I've seen posts where people are saying their teachers have provided them with answers to the Activities in the exam and they're just going to memorise them. Also other teachers are helping their students in between the exam sessions, which will literally be like handing out answers; something which my teacher has flatly refused to do as he says its against the exam rules seeing as when youve started the exam you're essentially in exam conditions.

Now I know some teachers are to blame for this but Edexcel really hasn't done anything about it. Theres such rampant cheating due to the fact its impossible to track it down and find out and I've got a feeling that theres going to be a whole load of moderating at the end of this exam period. The whole exam structure is a complete shambles.

I have to say though I'm with Edexcel for their Maths course and that seems to be working fine.

Applied ICT??? - Dont do it.
