Subject: Speeding and Stop Signs

I just heard about this web site and I was surprised to see the same complaints that I have staring me in the face. It sounds like on the subject of people's driving behavior, we've had a lot of dialogue. Here is the latest from our Chief of Police:

Eric,

I appreciate hearing from you because it gives us a chance to direct our resources where they are needed the most. We have made a concentrated effort over the last several years in your plat to address traffic violations. In our and most other municipalities today, we simply don’t have enough officers to deal with the problem the way we would both like to see it dealt with. I know that it is frustrating to see traffic violations in your neighborhood; we share that frustration for your neighborhood and all the other neighborhoods in the Township. (Unfortunately the adage is that there is never a cop around when you need one and always one there when you’d rather not see one seems to hold true). We really try to get as much neighborhood traffic enforcement in as we can in addition to the other work that we must do.

What I would propose is this: we will place our speed trailer (the trailer that contains radar and a large display of the vehicle’s speed) in your neighborhood and follow it up with directed patrol for traffic violations. I am forwarding this message to our Patrol Division Commander, Lt. Steve Rickey to take these actions. We have a list for the trailer and we’ll get it out as soon as we can. As for the signs, frankly I’m not convinced that they do much good. Most drivers in a plat such as yours get lax about their habits – rolling through stop signs or driving a little too fast - in part because they aren’t paying attention to their driving – they’re thinking about other things. We find that bringing their attention to their speed with the trailer and following it up with enforcement is one of the most effective things we can do.

Please let me know if we can be of further assistance.

Subject: Valleywood Subdivision

Chief Bourgeois,

Me name is Eric and I live on Meadowcroft Lane with my wife and son in the Valleywood subdivision. I am writing to see what can be done to stem the driving violations I believe I see in the sub nearly every day. I jog and walk through the sub at least 3 times per week and without fail I see someone running through stop signs or speeding. As you may or may not know, our subdivision has many young children, including my own. They are often riding bikes and running around with their friends and I'm concerned that your department may be responding to a tragic situation if we don't do something to let people know their driving behavior is unacceptable.

If you have suggestions for things that I can do to help, please let me know. I have seen people on my street with signs they have bought asking people to "slow down" or "children at play". If you believe this is a good idea, I'd be happy to try it. What I would like to see is more police patrols in our neighborhood in the hope that we can address the situation and make our neighborhood safer for everyone.

Thank you,

Eric

I removed my last name and address but most of you seem to know us as we live next to the drainage pond. I am very concerned about the speeding and running stop signs because we go for a lot of walks and I jog at night. I'm not sure what else we can do besides make sure we ourselves aren't the culprits and to keep our issues in front of the police.

If we still have a neighborhood watch I'd like to be notified as our neighbors have had packages stolen from the porches in broad daylight, in addition to the poor driving.

Thanks,

Eric
