Subject: Tech Trivia Question

Tech History
PLANS FOR NEW BUILDING

There are rumors of another building for the Technical High School. It looks as though the future of the school is being planned in a large way. We are hoping that the next new building will be ready, in part at least, by next September, since the Technical High School is now receiving five hundred new students each term. Probably the next building can bring into use a Science Laboratory, Household Arts equipment, and drafting rooms in addition to extra class room space. It gives all of us a comfortable feeling to know that the future at Tech is being taken care of and each building constructed hereafter will make up one unit of a greater Tech. The deed for the grounds has been given to the Board of School Commissioners so that the future of the school is now assured.
QUESTION:
What year was this published in a Arsenal Technical Cannon Yearbook?

Randy,

I'll take a guess that it refers to Stuart Hall and is noted in the 1940 yearbook.

Keep it touch,

Sam ('58)

Randy, you're not doing to well on this; maybe you should just give us the answer.

Answer to question of three months back...(sorry for the delay)

The above was published in the January 1917 Arsenal Cannon Yearbook. The very first article under SCHOOL NEWS. Now the building it was referring to was the ANNEX. This was before my time. From images I have, it was just north of the old original Federal Arsenal Artillery Building (possible connected?) The Artillery Building and the Annex were demolished to make way for the new cafeteria and music building of the early 1960's. Those building should have never been torn down...way to much history lost.

Those of us from that era remember that the Annex Building was torn down to make way for Morgan Hall. I had no idea that it was built in 1917. I awlays thought it was newer.

You're right about the Artillery Building being torn down. It was a shame to see one of the orginal buildings distroyed even in the name of progress. I remember when they tore down the East Residence. I thought that was bad. I suppose time marches on and things must change.

From what my parents said, the East Residence was torn down in about 1928 in order to make room for the south-east wing of the Main. Was it really necessay? Looking at aerial views of the campus, it looks like there would have been room for both. But, of course I don't know exactly where the East Residence was located over on that side (I just guesstimated the same distance from the Arsenal as the West Residence).

Was the Annex adjacent but not connected to the west wing of Stuart Hall? I believe that I had some science laboratory lectures there?

Glenn, You are correct. The Annex Building was located about fifty feet or so from the west end of Stuart Hall. The two buildings were not connected. I believe it was use for industrial arts classes although, I never had any classes in the building.

What is the little building back by the football field I believe. Dates maybe from before the Civil War and might have stored munitions. I hope it has not been torn down for the new football field. I think it is the oldest building on campus.

For Donna:
TECH POWDER MAGAZINE GOING MODERN; STEAM HEAT TO REPLACE OLD STOVE

One of the historic landmarks of Indianapolis is going modern after more than 75 years.
Beginning with this fall, steam heat will replace the old school house type of stove which has heated the old powder magazine at Arsenal Technical High School.
Erected in 1865 for the storage of powder for the Union forces in the Civil War, the magazine has served for more than 20 years as a supply depot for all of the ROTC units in the Indianapolis high schools.
It is from the shelves of the magazine that Col. Will H. Brown, military property custodian for the Indianapolis public schools since 1933 has issued uniforms and paraphernalia to ROTC student of Arsenal Technical, Shortridge, George Washington, Emmerich Manual, and Crispus Attucks high schools.
However, according to Col. Brown the old stove is on its way out not because it fails to provide enough heat in the winter but because it does not abide by the many signs which still mark the site of the magazine: “No Smoking.”
The military custodian’s chief problem has been to keep the government’s uniforms clean. This he said, has been impossible when the smoke which sometimes fills the supply depot is mingles with the soot from the Indiana coal which belches forth from the flue outside.
Incidentally he said the stove burned from 10 to 20 tons of coal each winter.
The Indianapolis Board of School Commissioners Tuesday night, upon the recommendation of J.E. McGaughey, superintendent of buildings and grounds voted to install steam heat in the magazine, the estimated cost to be $383.73. (that would cost $4,477.00 in 2006)
The steam line to the shower rooms at the Tech stadium will be tapped and a unit heater with blower arrangement will be installed on the west wall of the magazine.

Randy,
I assume that the Magazine has not been torn down in order to expand things at the football stadium, right? What is it used for today (if anything)? Are JROTC uniforms still stored there?

Kevin as of recent times the Magazine is still there. If they town fathers touch that Magazine there should be a march on town hall like you have never seen before!!!!!!!!!
Don't know what the magazine is used for at this time.
