Ginny, Jess, Bates, & others,

As the person who advised the webmistress to change the password (and to do so each semester from now on), I think it's time for me to weigh in.

The password change was in no way intended to offend any of the alumnae or to cut you off from the chapter. In the simplest sense, it was a decision based on risk management concerns. I know, I know, I sound like a broken record, but sometimes that's my job.

The web site is an official "publication" of the chapter. Anything posted on it is therefore deemed to be planned by/sanctioned by/an event of the chapter. So the chapter members strictly follow a policy of not posting anything on the message board that they would not otherwise announce in a chapter meeting or post on the board in the Danna Center. However, there have been several occasions when alumnae have posted messages asking people to meet them out at bars or invited chapter members to come share a keg they were buying. Even though I know that no one posting anything like that meant any harm by it, those kinds of messages are just not acceptable. It's the old risk management thing . . . if something happens at an event like that, the chapter could be held legally responsible. That's just a risk they cannot afford (literally) to take.

There have also been several members who have resigned from Alpha Chi Omega after having received the password. Some of them didn't resign under the happiest circumstances. So it wasn't appropriate at all for them to have access to the board.

The other issue is a little touchier. Frankly, there isn't a whole lot posted on the message board that really falls into the category of "what's going on in the chapter." As you all know, it's a lot of requests for rides to the airport, announcements about changes of time and place for events, discussions about Joe Millionaire and American Idol, and inside jokes. The purpose of the board is to promote closeness within the chapter and allow current members to communicate with each other. I have to be honest and tell y'all that some of them think it's kind of strange that people who graduated several years ago were still posting messages on "their" board.

They created this board so that alumnae could keep in touch with one another. Clearly they need to find a way to encourage communication between both groups, since there will always be alumnae who graduate and remain close to current members. Maybe the solution is to make some upgrades to the site that would allow them to post a chapter calendar more efficiently so that the alumnae could still see what is going on. (FYI -- the calendar function is there, but it's very cumbersome and time consuming, making it pretty impractical for them to enter everything onto it.) I don't know what the answer is, but I welcome your suggestions.

Ginny, you are absolutely correct that the chapter needs to do more in the way of alumnae relations. They have had some success in the last year or so doing things with the N.O. alumnae chapter, but you're point is well taken that the Zeta Psi alumnae in other parts of the country have largely been ignored. That is something that I will talk with the current Executive Board about for the fall semester. Money has always been an issue, but maybe an email newsletter a few times a year would work. Is that something y'all would be interested in?

I'm sorry if this decision has upset you, but I hope you can understand the intentions of it. If you have any questions about it, please email me and we can chat. And please, please, please, offer some (inexpensive) ideas about how the chapter can stay in touch with you and what you want to know from them.

Loyally,
Liz Schafer
