Your message about your nanny job requiring you to go to Hawaii was posted several months ago, but maybe you haven't gone yet...

No, this is completely unfair. It is not a demonstration of balanced giving and receiving. This is your employer pushing on your boundaries to see how far they can go. This is not a vacation for you, regardless that you may have a little fun while there--if it were your vacation, would you really bring both your employer and a difficult child along? As part of your job you are required to be there, thus, the employer pays for all related costs in addition to your regular payrate.

If they want to pay you a little less, then what goes along with that is a little less hours worked as well, so you DO have some time to enjoy the scenery. Fair is fair, and if they want to pay you less, then THEY can spend more time with their child in lieu of forking over the dough.

It is okay that you agreed to this ahead of time (to "make less money") and then changed your mind when you realized that would be dis-honoring yourself. After all, it appears your employer changed their mind as well, trying to get away with paying you even less than agreed upon (i.e. you pay your own way to Hawaii to work for them).

You have 3 choices here:

1/ do whatever your employer says and dis-honor yourself & get used;

2/ avoid dealing with this completely and quit the employer since they clearly are trying to take advantage of you;

3/ view this as an opportunity for you to learn how to stand up for yourself and require fair treatment.

Your employer will probably not like it if you stand up for yourself and require them to be fair to you, but that's because they are trying to save money and take advantage of you. That doesn't mean you should back down. It is hard to stand up for yourself when you're not used to it, but in the long run, it's better for you because you show through action that you value yourself. Ultimately you'll feel better about yourself if you don't allow people to use you. You count too!

Blessings and happy journeys. :)
