That would be 3rd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment 3rd Marine Division. I left Nam in July 1970 hooked up with 1/9 the Walking Dead in Okinawa. The division set out for Coast of Nam around Aug-Dec 1970 including Japan MT. Fuji, & the Philippines Subic Bay area, to the best of my memories.

Linage 1970 – 1994

From November 1970 to March 1971, the battalion again deployed with Amphibious Ready Group - Alpha and served in Vietnamese waters. The battalion’s last involvement with Vietnam was when it participated in Operation Frequent Wind as part of Regimental Landing Team-4 in 1975. In May 1981, 3/9’s flag returned to the U.S., joining the 7th Marines at San Mateo, Camp Pendleton, California. During the 1980s, 3/9 participated in the battalion rotation between the U.S. and Okinawa. The battalion served in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm from August 1990 to June 1991. The battalion’s last deployment was to Somalia for Operation Restore Hope in 1992. The battalion was deactivated and re-designated 3d Battalion, 4th Marines on September 2, 1994.
