Number one, please do not give up on this wonderful breed. They are the most wonderful animals. Number two, you have to take a lot of what is said with a block, not a grain of salt. There are a lot of good breeders out there and they have a lot of good dogs...you just have to let the dogs speak for themselves. Find a breeder who has a line that you are interested in and then do some research on your own...don't let the "he said she said" stuff cloud your desire to get that wonderful puppy that will change your life for the better. It has been said that the perfect dog does not exist, but if you work on it, you can get really close...just don't give up or give in to all the hype...
