If you want a belt and braces job use epoxy resin from Wests or Bluegee mixed to the runnier consistency required for soaking the wood.

Marine ply is only different from other plys by the type of glue used. There are several grades of "waterproofing" though, and if it seems cheap it is probably the wrong one. A good timber merchant would know but you would need a whole sheet then, whereas if you go to someone like Kim Howell at Cobbs Quay in Poole you can get an offcut very cheaply.

If you do epoxy it that needs to have a finish coat of varnish as epoxies weather.
