Subject: Ordinance through a Ballot Initiative...

Okay here's the deal. The only way to get 4 guys on each truck with minimum mandated staffing without having to worry about the administration slashing our budget is through an ordinance.

I've spoken with many smart people and all agree that a BALLOT INITIATIVE is the way to assure us that our jobs are protected. There's a couple issues that will need to be addressed over the next 2 years to make it into a reality.

1/3 of the registered voters need to approve a ballot initiative to make it a binding ordinance. So if we had a ballot initiative that read like so

"Initiative to mandate staffing levels of no less than 48 fire fighters per shift."

Approximately 53,000 voters means about 16,000 voters need to vote in the affirmative for the ballot initiative. In the 2000 election Gore v. Bush, 30,000 people voted. So between now and then, we need to start planning our strategy. Car Washes, Raffles, and any other fund raising event ought to be pursued so as to raise money to have an effective P.R. Campaign through print and television media outlets.

We've got 2 years to plan. I believe that if we want minimum staffing levels, it's there for our taking. All we have to do is "GO FOR IT".
