Subject: Unearthed Arcana

I picked up Unearthed Arcana tonight. Pretty neat stuff. Some of the rules they present are convoluted. They have rules for converting armor over to DR and for characters to gain a Defense Bonus as they go up in levels.

I really like the Vitality and Wound Points system...

There's a section on FACING. :) Also rules on using hexes instead of squares.

I absolutely LOVE some of the rules for variants to the classes. For instance... Instead of wild shape, a druid can take on one or more "aspects of nature" allowing them to fly, deliver poisonous attacks, take on the shape of a plant (sorta), etc. Terrain bonus for rangers instead of favored enemy.

I'd love to play a party of Gestalt Characters sometime! Two classes at once, take the best of overlapping values and all other bonuses, abilities, etc. Maybe for the undead huntin group... :)

Metamagic components. Automatically gain metamagic benefits by using rare and exotic materials to cast the spell.

Wow, there's a "spell point" system, very similar to the old psionics for spells.

Legendary weapons kick butt! Wow! Weapons that go up in power as you do. You get even more abilities for taking a special Legendary Weapon class.

Reputation points. (Is this a new concept ala Conan RPG or is this a throwback to an older version of DND?)

Sanity rules and spells that cause loss of sanity. Cause fear, doom, feat, phant killer, scare, symbol of fear...more. All kinds of Phobias. A good one for Khrenikath (goodness knows he'll get some eventually) is Arcuophobia...the fear of bows. :)

The bloodlines are nicely done too. Just about any you would need. I still don't get the vampire bloodline tho.

All in all, a great book and well worth the $30 I dropped on it. If we don't use them before hand, I may use some of the variant rules when I DM some games this fall. I'm already considering asking Vince about using some of the druid variants for Zethar. :)
