Virtually all stories take that pattern to some degree. The giant threat may not always be a monster, but a more personal "threat" or conflict in the case of dramas and such, but that is a typical pattern. Take a Perry Mason book or TV episode - a potential defendant is threatened with going to the gas chamber, Perry Mason enters the scene, proves someone else did it, is congratulated by the D.A. and the police on helping justice prevail, then getting a huge check at the end (the last part is more common in the books than in the TV show, but it did happen on more than one episode).
