I brought my compass to the summit of Mt Hale 07/28/08. I ascertained north and then held the compass close (a few inches) to the side of some larger rocks around the cairn and in the vicinity of the former fire tower and the needle moved at least a quarter turn. These are larger rocks that are not part of the cairn and seem to be partially buried and stick out about a foot or so from the ground and are about 2 feet or 3 feet long. Their appearance is not the typical NH granite.
